Preschool

Program Description
As a child enters Pre-kindergarten, he/she learns many skills and concepts that will provide him/her with an excellent foundation as a life-long learner. Through the program at St. Hilary School, students develop confidence, improve social skills, and practice reasoning abilities. The experienced staff will focus on preparing the students academic abilities in the areas of math, reading, writing and language arts. Additionally, students actively take part in the art, music, and physical education programs offered by the school.

Main Themes/Skills:

Religion
Students actively explore and identify with elements of the Catholic religion. Teachers affirm the belief that there is meaning in life centered in God and thereby foster a sense of hope within the individual and the school community. Students explore the context, events, and meaning of a scriptural passage and various Catholic prayers and traditions.

Language Arts
Students develop and expand receptive language (listening) skills, expressive language (speaking) skills, and age-appropriate writing skills. They also begin to develop age-appropriate strategies that will assist them in reading. For example, students associate symbols with objects, concepts and functions and respond to these symbols in their environment.

Math
Students learn one-to-one correspondence, matching to identify sets, counting (1-50), creating sets, recognizing and learning to write numbers, determining more or less, comparing numbers and the size of objects, and learn about shapes and patterns.

Social and Emotional Development
Students develop self-help skills, social awareness, self-discipline, confidence, and participate freely in a supportive classroom community.
