Program Description
GRADES: Kindergarten through 2
Art at this level is about the basics. Students learn about color, shape and line. They learn basic paper techniques like folding, cutting and gluing. They also work with clay and paints. Various artists and cultures are also introduced at this level.
GRADES: 3 through 5
Students at these grade levels delve further into the elements of art. Color, shape and line are again discussed, however, texture, space and value are also explored. Materials like papier mache' and Sculpey are used to create sculpture. Students learn about watercolor techniques and learn to mix secondary colors. Students begin to study the time periods of art and various art theories in more detail. Students also work with basic drawing techniques like proportion and shading.
GRADES: 6 through 8
Students at this level of art instruction learn more about basic art elements and study principles like rhythm, unity and balance. They learn to look at works of art and identify them by style, artist and/or time period. They learn techniques in ink drawing, block printing and wire sculpture. They study art history to understand how past human experiences are expressed in art. They learn to look at art in a critical manner and discuss its contribution to society.
