Fifth Grade

Program Description
A fifth grade student experiences many opportunities for academic growth and spiritual development. The core of the curriculum includes a strong diversified Language Arts Program which includes reading, English, spelling and handwriting. Students exchange classes for religion, math, science and social studies.

Main Themes/Skills


Religion
Religion focuses on the Eucharist, Reconciliation, the Sacraments, the liturgical seasons of the year, as well as ways to build a Christian community. Students learn basic Catholic doctrine and become aware of social justice.

Language Arts/Reading
Reading centers on the examination of various forms of literature, character studies, author’s purpose and contextual word meanings, comprehension, and main ideas as well as details that support the theme of the novel.

Language Arts/English
English emphasizes a continuation of building upon a foundation in basic grammar, construction of diverse forms of writing, appreciation and use of poetry.

Language Arts/Spelling
Spelling examines and extends knowledge of basic rules that govern spelling, identification of prefixes and suffixes and their utilization, and application of words in a dictation format.

Mathematics
The Math curriculum engages students in basic computation skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Other highlights of inquiry look at fractions, geometry, measurement, graphing and ratios. Students use problem solving strategies with correct math terminology.

Science
The Science curriculum explores the domains of life science, the solar system, physical science, earth science, and the human body systems.

Social Studies
The Social Studies curriculum uses map and globe skills, studies various regions of the world
while concentrating on Western civilization and evaluates different forms of government.

Highlights of Fifth Grade:
Science Fair, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), Student Council participation, and Faith Partner Program.
