Assessment:
Prior to entering the Kindergarten Program, the children are given an assessment. The assessment takes place at the end of Pre-K. The newly enrolled students are assessed in August or at the time of enrollment. The assessment consists of the following: letter recognition, number recognition, basic shapes, colors, printing first name, drawing shapes and ability to cut successfully.
Program Description:
As a student enters Kindergarten he/she builds upon skills that were introduced in Pre-K. Included in these skills are growth in social development, academics, and fine/gross motor skills. The curriculum consists of Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Specifically within language arts, the children are exposed to various units that revolve around the letter of the week. Throughout the unit the children master the sounds of the letters, print the letters and begin reading words.
Main Themes/Skills:
Religion:
Children learn the importance of the story of Creation, prayers, holidays and holy days, the life of Jesus, various Bible stories, saints and participate in some of our Faith Partner activities.
Language Arts/Phonics:
Children focus on: letter recognition, sound recognition (consonants and short vowel sounds), reading sight words, reading words by sounding out, identifying different forms of literature, reading and spelling color words, recognizing days of the weeks and months, developing reading comprehension strategies and listening and speaking effectively.
Language Arts/Handwriting:
Children are able to: understand the conventions of writing left to right, write journal sentences, print first/last name by memory, write words, print upper/lower case letters, identify various end marks of a sentence and what they mean.
Mathematics:
Children are able to: recognize numbers 1-100, count by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and backwards, complete and create patterns, graph, tell time to the hour and half hour, identify and understand the value of the penny, nickel, dime and quarter, count to 100, add and subtract numbers 0-10, order numbers, and identify basic shapes.
Social Studies:
The children learn about: historical figures, people in our neighborhood, helping others, geography, friends/sharing, and different cultures.
Science:
The curriculum centers on: life cycles of various animals, oceans, space, plants, weather, the earth, non living/living things, homes for living things, parts of an animal, magnets, the five senses and the four seasons.
Instructional Methodologies:
The children are engaged: in small/large group discussions/activities, hands on activities and individual activities.
Celebration:
At the end of the school year, the children take part in Kindergarten celebration, which is held in the gym/auditorium. The children sing various songs and receive a certificate for completing Kindergarten.
