Program Description
The Physical Education program at St. Hilary Elementary School is centered on a foundation of theory and practice. When the student is active, he/she is learning in an authentic manner. Students make theory come alive through participation in a variety of physical activity.
Grades PreKindergarten through 2
Primary grade students enjoy classroom activity with a concentration on fundamentals such as improving their coordination and flexibility by working on directionality, balance, and rhythm. Students work individually, in small groups, as well as full class activity.
Grades 3 through 6
Intermediate grade students continue to work on the fundamentals of athletic activity, as well as shift their focus to organized team games. Teamwork among classmates is stressed as the students work to improve their individual sports skills and advance towards team games.
Grades 7 through 8
Junior high students work on improving their own athletic skills as they apply to individual and team sports. Students work to “master” athletic skills as well as sportsmanship through learning rules and guidelines of many different activities. Students study lifetime activity and its potential benefits in adult life.
Student’s individual skill and perseverance is tested during the annual Presidential Physical Fitness Test. A series of five different fitness tests are given to each student in first through eighth grade. Individual awards are presented at the end of the year.
At times during the year, various health related issues are shared with the students, such as nutrition, fire safety and athletic injuries.
